High in the canopy of the Daintree Rainforest hangs a living relic from Earth’s deep evolutionary past, the Tassel Fern (Phlegmariurus phlegmarioides).
With its long, green, pendulous stems draping from rainforest trees, this remarkable plant is more than just beautiful. It belongs to one of the oldest surviving lineages of vascular plants on Earth, the ancient lycophytes, a group that evolved more than 400 million years ago, long before dinosaurs walked the planet and before flowering plants even existed.

Tassel Fern (Phlegmariurus phlegmarioides).
When you stand beneath these plants in the canopy of the Daintree Rainforest, you are looking at a direct connection to the earliest forests that transformed life on Earth.
The species can be difficult to see in the rainforest because it often grows high in the canopy, sometimes more than 30 metres above the forest floor. Most visitors walk beneath it without ever realising it is there.
But during ecological surveys at Lot 1, Cape Tribulation Road, our botanist, Kristopher Kupsch, knew exactly what to look for. A fallen piece of Tassel Fern on the forest floor revealed what was growing far above in the canopy overhead, a hidden glimpse into one of Earth’s most ancient surviving plant lineages.
Moments like this remind us how much of the rainforest remains unseen, and how many extraordinary species depend on intact, mature forest to survive.
That is why protecting at-risk rainforests is so important. The purchase and protection of Lot 1 Cape Tribulation Road is helping protect our biodiversity to preserve life on Earth.
The Daintree is not simply a rainforest. It is a living museum preserving ancient plant lineages that have survived continental drift, climate upheaval and mass extinctions. The lowland rainforests between the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation are recognised for containing extraordinary biodiversity and ancient plant families with deep evolutionary origins.

At risk - Lot 1 Cape Tribulation Road.
Lot 1 Cape Tribulation Road represents a rare opportunity to secure and protect a significant parcel of this globally important rainforest habitat before future development fragments it forever. Properties along Cape Tribulation Road have historically faced pressure from subdivision and residential development, contributing to the fragmentation of the rainforest ecosystem.
Across the Daintree lowlands, conservation organisations and supporters have worked for decades to buy back vulnerable freehold blocks and return them to permanent protection. These efforts are helping reconnect rainforest habitat for species such as the endangered Southern Cassowary while safeguarding ancient ecosystems recognised under Australia’s environmental laws.
But this work can only continue because people choose to act.
Every donation made to protect Lot 1 Cape Tribulation Road helps secure habitat for thousands of rainforest species, from towering fan palms and primitive flowering plants to ancient epiphytes like the Tassel Fern quietly hanging in the canopy above.
These plants are survivors from another world.
Long before humans existed, before Australia separated from the Breakup of Gondwana, ancestors of plants like the Tassel Fern were already growing in Earth’s forests. Today, the Daintree remains one of the few places where this extraordinary evolutionary story can still be experienced alive and intact.
The decisions we make now will determine whether future generations inherit a connected rainforest ecosystem, or only fragments of what once existed.
