Plant a tree and help save Australia’s iconic big bird!

The Southern Cassowary is endangered and needs your help.

Habitat loss has pushed this remarkable rainforest bird towards extinction. In the Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland, it's estimated that only 4,400 Cassowaries remain in the wild, including chicks. Every year, rainforest habitat becomes more fragmented, reducing the habitat and the rainforest fruits that Cassowaries depend on to survive.

There's a simple solution. The fruits of rainforest plants make up 98% of the Cassowary’s diet.

Plant a tree to save the Cassowary.

We are preparing to plant another 1,000 rainforest trees in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest to restore vital Cassowary habitat. These trees will help reconnect fragmented rainforest, increase food-producing plants, and rebuild the rainforest canopy for future generations of Cassowaries.

Every $10 Plants and cares for One Tree

Your donation will fund the growing, planting, and care of rainforest trees for Cassowaries.

  • $10 plants 1 tree
  • $20 plants 2 trees
  • $50 plants 5 trees
  • $200 plants 20 trees

Every tree restores habitat for the endangered Southern Cassowary. Please donate today and help bring the rainforest back to life.

Why Cassowaries Matter

The Southern Cassowary is listed as Endangered under Australia’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

Cassowaries play a critical role in rainforest ecology. Often called the “gardener of the rainforest,” they spread the seeds of many rainforest plants through their droppings, helping rainforests regenerate naturally. Without a healthy rainforest, Cassowaries cannot survive. And without Cassowaries, the rainforest itself begins to change.

The biggest threat facing Cassowaries today is habitat loss. The number one action needed is to plant trees and restore rainforest habitat.

The Problem

Large areas of lowland rainforest in the Daintree were cleared in the past, reducing and fragmenting essential rainforest habitat.

The trees will be planted on land purchased in the Daintree. We have purchased 36 rainforest properties for conservation in the Daintree. Around one-third of these properties contain previously disturbed areas that now need active restoration.

Without intervention, these degraded areas can remain dominated by weeds and fragmented vegetation for decades.

The rainforest and the Cassowary can't wait that long.

The Solution

We are restoring rainforest habitat on Lot 70 Forest Creek Road by planting 1,000 native rainforest trees.

From December 2026 to May 2027, we will:

  • Plant 1,000 native rainforest trees
  • Restore gaps in the rainforest canopy
  • Increase food-producing trees for Cassowaries
  • Control weeds and care for the site over the next three years to maximise tree survival

An ecologist selects species for planting to match the original rainforest on the property. Many of these species produce fruits eaten by Cassowaries. Through careful restoration and ongoing maintenance, we expect natural rainforest regeneration to accelerate alongside the planted trees.

If donations exceed the needs of this site, additional trees will be planted on other conservation properties in the Daintree lowlands.

Why the Daintree Matters

The Daintree Rainforest is one of the oldest continually existing rainforests on Earth, estimated to have survived for around 120 million years.

This extraordinary rainforest is recognised globally for its biodiversity and evolutionary significance. It provides habitat for countless ancient plant and animal species, including the endangered Southern Cassowary. Cassowaries depend upon tropical rainforest plants that produce the fruits that make up 98% of their diet.
